What is a crew cab vs double cab – which should you get?
These days pickups are everywhere. Long gone are the days where pickup trucks were vehicles made for work and utility. These days, trucks can be upgraded to be as opulent as the well-known brands in luxury. There is a pickup truck out there for you, regardless of whether you require a workhorse or want to cruise in style. After deciding if you must have 4-Wheel Drive (or if RWD will suffice), the next big decision is to decide which cab type works best for you.
A regular cab pickup has just one row of seats with a small amount of storage space and legroom, as the name implies. A regular cab truck was once the one way to buy pickup trucks. In most regular cabs, the seat practically touch the rear of the cab. This model is the “work” version of a pickup truck and usually comes with manual windows and locks. A regular cab is a work pickup truck, not for hauling your family and friends around.
As one might expect, an Extended Cab pickup (can also be called a Double Cab pickup) is basically just a Regular Cab with extra space behind the front seating. When first introduced, extended cab pickups were sold as 2-door models and only had rear jump seats available. Now sometimes known as a Double Cab pickup, these trucks now have a second row of small doors for access to the rear cargo area. Even though there are 2 rows of seating, an Extended Cab pickup wouldn’t be the best choice for road trips, even though it can haul more people.
While maybe not as obvious as the other types, a Crew Cab pickup truck features 4 regular-size doors and the space to transport your ‘crew.’ Crew Cab pickup trucks are built to transport more of the driver’s stuff and-or people. In some circles, these styles of pickups have replaced the 4-door sedan as the family vehicle. A Crew Cab truck’s larger size and more powerful engine options are unavailable in the sedan segment while still being able to provide the luxuries and passenger legroom that families need.
